Harmony Day 2016
We are Kogarah. Everyone belongs.
On Wednesday 23 March 2016, the Mayor of the City of Kogarah Councillor Stephen Agius conducted a special Citizenship Ceremony in the Kogarah Town Square. This ceremony welcomed 50 new Australian citizens to the Kogarah area as part of our Harmony Day celebrations. The 2016 theme for Harmony Day is ‘our diversity is our strength’.
Each year, Harmony Day celebrates Australia’s cultural diversity and the strengths of our community members. It is a day to embrace our shared common goals while recognising our different cultural backgrounds. This event featured a special interactive artwork, the ‘Harmony Day Globe’ by artist Kassandra Bossell. Our new citizens, as well as members of the community and Council staff, marked their unique journeys to our wonderful City on this sculpture to showcase their countries of origin. The diversity of journeys in brightly coloured thread was a beautiful acknowledgement of the diversity and individuality of each citizen’s story.
Council welcomed all members of the public to come and share in this wonderful occasion, to celebrate Kogarah’s 2016 Harmony Day and Citizenship Ceremony. Cultural entertainment was provided for the new citizens and supporters, with dance groups and live music. The Mayor of the City of Kogarah, Cr Stephen Agius, said, “I am proud to be able to welcome new citizens as part of my duties as Mayor… It is up to each and every one of us to ensure that we live side by side in harmony and peace. It is our responsibility to respect one another and our individual values and beliefs. It is equally important to share what we have in common – in particular that we have each chosen to make this community, this city, this country our home. Harmony Day is the perfect day to celebrate our diversity and multiculturalism.”
