Seniors Programs and Activities
Kogarah City Council's Aged and Disability Officer works collaboratively with the Community Services section, other councils and Aged Services in the St George region to ensure that older people's contributions and participation in the community continue to be supported and celebrated.
Older people are a major and diverse part of the Kogarah community, comprising a quarter of the Kogarah area total population. Kogarah has more than 10,000 residents over 60 years of age; this represents 19% of the total population.
As our population becomes significantly older, we recognise the need for older members of the community to have a say in how the region is developed and how our services can better meet the needs of the aged.
Council has developed a range of programs to meet the needs of our older community members which include:
- Active Ageing
- Seniors Seminars
- Seniors Week Activities
If you are interested in finding out more about any of these programs, please contact Council's Community Development Officer - Aged and Disability on 9330 9455.
Seniors Week 2016
Kogarah City Council’s Seniors Week 2016 program of events celebrates the contributions seniors have made to the local community. It features an array of activities over a two week period which commenced on Friday 1 April and concludes on Wednesday 20 April. Council encourages participation amongst all Seniors 60 years and over.
The following activities are incorporated in Kogarah City Council's Seniors Week celebrations:
- Get Fit ‘Gangnam Style’ – Chinese Dance Classes
- Eden Gardens Tour with Devonshire Tea
- Be Agile, not Fragile – Yoga in Oatley Memorial Gardens with the Mobile Yogi
- Seniors Matinee Concert
- ABC Ultimo Tour
- Dr Gary Darby Lecture Series
- Kogarah Seniors Computer Club Open day
Council organises the program of events in partnership with a Seniors Week Committee, which consists of representation from residents and local not for profit organisations across the local government area. The Committee assist with the planning and execution of the events, as well as the promotion of the activities to their peers.
The program is a publication of activities and events from January to April 2016, and is available on-line, in Kogarah’s libraries, Customer Service Centre and community organisations that are participating in Seniors Week 2016.
