Australia Day Celebrations
Sunday 26 January 2014
Carss Bush Park, Carss Park
10am - 9pm
Free Community Event
Each year on Australia Day, Kogarah residents and their families traditionally gather in their thousands at Carss Bush Park. The family-friendly day begins with children's entertainment and activities on the main stage.
This is followed by a formal Citizenship Ceremony for fifty new Australians. Endeavour Harmony Chorus sing the Australian National Anthem and the 1st Kyle Bay Sea Scouts raise the Australian Flag. Our Citizen of the Year and Australia Day Ambassador are also awarded at this time. In the evening the main stage hosts an excellent array of bands performing well-known songs in the few hours before the fireworks!
The Australia Day Fireworks take place at 9pm over Kogarah Bay. The best vantage points include the shoreline of Kogarah Bay and higher areas of the Kogarah area including Carss Park, Blakehurst, Carlton and Bexley. The fireworks can also be seen from areas within the Rockdale, Hurstville and Sutherland Shire Local Government Areas.
The rest of the day is filled with community and cultural performers from around the Kogarah area. Stallholders with multicultural foods, clothing, novelty stores and craft stores fill the Marketstall area.
On Kogarah Bay, The Australia Day Botany Bay Regatta Committee's "Families Afloat": Boat Dress up assembles between 6pm and 7pm.
Carss Park Cottage Museum is also open for tours and visits between noon - 6pm with the volunteers of the Kogarah Historical Society.
This day is supported onsite by Kogarah State Emergency Service, St John Ambulance, Kogarah Fire Brigade and the NSW Police Kogarah Local Area Command.
The program for Australia Day at Carss Bush Park consists of professional entertainment, activities, roving performers and cultural and community performers.
Council is currently seeking community performance groups from the local area. Please contact Bridget Keating, Council's Events Coordinator on 9330 9424 for more information.
