Volunteer Water Monitoring Group

Community volunteer water quality monitoring group

Do you enjoy being outside and learning about nature? Want to make a difference to our local environment?

Kogarah City Council invites you to join Georges River Watchers, a community volunteer based water quality monitoring program established in partnership with Sydney Water's Streamwatch Program.

The program aims to protect the natural environment, educate community members and enhance the communication networks with Kogarah City Council staff.

The Georges River Watchers undertakes water quality testing on the third Sunday of each month (excluding December and January), collecting samples from sites across the Kogarah City Council local government area.

The location of each meeting is either Moore Reserve or Claydon Reserve, depending on the month.

Volunteers don't need to be environmental scientists, they simply require a healthy interest in monitoring the environment and discovering how various factors affect our local waterways.

Why the results are important

Council manages its estuaries and waterways based on the latest information available and this includes the results of testing by the Georges River Watchers. Recently a final-year student from the University of Technology, Sydney completed a study of water testing results from the last five years and discovered that water quality in bays and estuaries of the Kogarah City Council area was improving, but that more was needed to improve the quality of stormwater entering our waterways. It is studies like this that allow Council to do more to improve the health of our local environment.

Monitoring sites

The sites were carefully selected in order to deliver an accurate measurement of the overall catchment water quality whilst safety and health of volunteers are not compromised. The group meets monthly and samples four sites every month, thus allowing each site to be sampled every two months.

A map of the selected sites is shown below.
