Parking Rules

The following information provides an explanation of parking signage throughout the City of Kogarah as well as information on legal and illegal parking rules.

Works Zone SignA driver may legally pick up and drop off passengers or goods in this area as long as they do not leave the vehicle unattended and complete the action as soon as possible. You should ensure that you do not obstruct Works Zone vehicles and move if they require the spot.

No Parking SignA driver may legally pick up and drop off passengers or goods in this area as long as they do not leave the vehicle unattended and complete the action within 2 minutes (5 minutes if you hold an Mobility Parking Scheme permit). These areas may also display ‘Kiss and Ride’ signs.

Loading Zone SignA driver may legally pick up and drop off passengers or goods in this area as long as they do not leave the vehicle unattended and complete the action as soon as possible. You should ensure that you do not obstruct Loading Zone vehicles and move if they require the spot.

No stopping signA driver must not stop in these areas.
Stopping in an area marked by these signs may result in being issued a fine exceeding $200.

No Stopping Taxis Excepted SignIn some areas Taxis only may be allowed to stop and these signs display ‘Taxis Excepted 1 Minute’.
Taxi Zone SignThese areas are for Taxis only.  When hiring a Taxi, try to find one in these areas first otherwise find a legal parking area to ‘flag’ down a Taxi.
Bus Zone SignThese zones are for buses only. Do not use these zones to pick up or drop off passengers or goods, as it obstructs buses from parking safely. Drivers found stopped in these areas may receive a fine exceeding $200.
Path Strip IllustrationIt is illegal to stop on a footpath or nature strip unless there is a council approved and constructed parking bay available. In other cases a vehicle must either park legally on the road, or wholly within the boundary of a property.
Over Driveway IllustrationA driver must not stop and leave their vehicle unattended on or across an access way or driveway, even if you reside or work at that property.
HOWEVER
If you are picking up or dropping off a passenger or goods, you may stop here briefly as long as no other signs apply.
Legal Parking IllustrationSome areas of the CBD have no signs at all. In these areas a vehicle may park for an unrestricted period as long as the vehicle does not exceed 4.5 tonne GVM or 7.5 metres in length.
Intersection IllustrationOn corners if no sign is present, a vehicle must be parked at least 10 metres from an intersectio.
Disability Parking SignOnly vehicles displaying a current Mobility Parking Scheme permit may park in these areas. Vehicles found parking in these areas without a valid permit may be issued a fine exceeding $500.
Permissive Parking SignIn the Kogarah CBD, these signs indicate timed parking zones. They may be in whole numbers such as 1P = 1 hour parking; fractions 1/4P = 15 minute parking; or minutes such as P30 minute = 30 minute parking.
Clearway SignStopping on a clearway is illegal. It may obstruct peak hour traffic and vehicles parked in these areas can be towed away and fines exceeding $200 will be issued.
2P Sign In areas designated for Resident Permit Holders, vehicles displaying a Resident’s Permit or Resident’s Visitor Permit are exempt from the time restrictions. Other vehicles must comply with the parking time displayed.
