Parking

Council has a number of officers who monitor parking throughout the Kogarah area to ensure regular traffic turn-over to support local business, pedestrian safety and safe traffic management. Some of the offences they monitor include:

  • Time restricted parking, including Council parking stations
  • No stopping
  • No standing
  • Bus zones &- Mobility parking

Parking control signs are in place for the safety of drivers and other road users, for example to provide a clear view around pedestrian crossings or intersections. For further information on the Australian Road Rules refer to www.rta.nsw.gov.au or the fact sheets shown below.

General Information

  • Parking signs can apply to either a length of road, an area or a car park. It is important that you look for signs when entering a street or carpark.
  • If a sign is located at a distance you should move to a point where you can read all panels of the sign.
  • You must read all panels of the sign as they may contain information relating to the location you wish to park. The panels with the arrows pointing towards your car advise which restrictions apply to you.
  • Parking signs should be checked every time you park your car, even if you are familiar with the area. Restrictions may be altered to cater for the changing needs of the community.
  • Information relating to the days and times when restrictions apply can vary. If no day or time is shown then the restriction applies twenty four (24) hours of each day of the year.
Appealing an Infringement

If you have been issued an infringement and you believe extenuating circumstances exist you may write to the:

State Debt Recovery Office
PO Box 786
Strawberry Hills 2012

The Bureau acts as an independent agent to assess your claims, thereby preventing any potential conflict of interest.

The following types of appeal are not considered valid reasons for withdrawal of a parking infringement:

  • poor visibility due to weather
  • not noticing a sign
  • reading only part of a multi-panel sign
  • not able to read the sign from the front seat of your car
  • forgetting to read the sign
  • not noticing the sign has been changed
  • running late or being in a hurry
  • being delayed at an appointment ( appointments, such as medical, are widely known to run late therefore an allowance for this should be made when parking your car)
  • stopping off in a prohibited area to pick up or drop off passengers
  • being new to the area and unfamiliar with the restrictions

Licensed drivers are expected to be aware of the Road Rules and adhere to them at all times.

Schools Enforcement

The aim of Council's School Enforcement Program is to minimise risks to children by parents and carers who choose to park illegally or drive irresponsibly when picking up or dropping off during school starting and finishing times.

The program has the co-operation of all school principals within the Kogarah Local Government Area and involves issuing regular warnings to parents via school newsletters.  Enforcement action is undertaken by two uniformed Council officers who record plate details of offending vehicles.
