Sporting History
Kogarah has a strong sporting history.
Moorefield Racing Club held its first meeting in 1888. St George Sailing Club established in 1897 at Rocky Point, and the Illawarra Suburbs Cricket Association (later St George Cricket Association) formed the same year. In 1903 St George District Rugby Union Club formed with a leading club official, Harold Judd, Captaining the Australian Wallabies team 1903-1905.
Although 1920 is regarded as the date the St George Rugby League Club was formed, rugby league had been played in the area since as early as 1908 when the first attempts were made to establish a rugby league club. Since its beginnings St George has gone on to reach the grand final on 27 occasions, winning fifteen times including the world record feat of eleven successive premierships between 1956 and 1966.
The 1990s saw St George on a roller-coaster ride with four grand final appearances (the last as St. George Illawarra in 1999) but unable to take a premiership. In 1998 St George became the competition's first Joint Venture team when they joined with Illawarra to form the St George Illawarra Dragons.
