Swimming Pool Safety

Sadly 16 toddlers and children under the age of five died from drowning in backyard pools in Australia in 2008. Missing, defective or inadequate pool fencing was found to be the cause of the tragedies in the majority of cases.

Council is keen to ensure all of the 3,123 swimming pools currently listed on Kogarah City Council's swimming pool register, are adequately fenced and those fences are checked to ensure they do what they're supposed to do - keep small children (and others who can't swim) out of harm's way.

Prevention is the first step and residents can now apply for a Swimming Pool Compliance Certificate whereby a Council Building Surveyor will inspect the pool and pool barrier/fence and ensure that the required pool resuscitation sign is in place in accordance with the NSW Swimming Pools Act, 1992.
